Introduction
Some inconsistent evidence indicates experiences of trauma and the presence of symptoms of PTSD are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. This relation has rarely been explored with community samples including participants with PTSD symptoms or who fulfill criteria for PTSD disorders.
ObjectivesWe identify those with a high number of PTSD symptoms and those fulfilling criteria for PTSD are more likely to have CVD than those without a PTSD syndrome or diagnosis. We examine rates of mental health access for those with PTSD and CVD.
MethodsWe use Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES) to examine differences in trauma/PTSD prevalence and the association of prior trauma exposure and PTSD diagnoses with CVD (n = 13,286). CIDI was used to make psychiatric diagnoses and medical data was acquired regarding onset and severity of CVD.
ResultsIndividuals with prior exposure to trauma and PTSD diagnoses had twice the likelihood of developing a cardiovascular disease as those without trauma exposure [OR = 1.77, 95% CI (1.0, 2.94)]. Having a PTSD diagnosis is a significant predictor of having a CVD for individuals who experienced a traumatic event.
The probability of developing a CVD was higher when patients had prior diagnosis of substance abuse [OR = 1.36, 95% CI (1.11, 1.65)] or mental health disorders [OR = 1.43, 95% CI (1.10, 1.87) for depression; OR = 1.33, 95% CI (1.04, 1.69) for anxiety]. Men were almost twice as likely as women to be diagnosed with a CVD [OR = 1.67, 95% CI (1.37, 2.00)].
ConclusionsExposure to trauma and the presence of PTSD symptoms are significantly associated with CVD.

Transparent cells in the vertebrate optical tract, such as lens fiber cells and corneal epithelium cells, have specialized proteins that somehow permit only a low level of light scattering in their cytoplasm. It has been shown that both cell types contain (1) beaded intermediate filaments as well as (2) α-crystallin globulins. It is known that genetic and chemical alterations to these specialized proteins induce cytoplasmic opaqueness and visual complications. Crystallins were described previously in the retinal Müller cells of frogs. In the present work, using immunocytochemistry, fluorescence confocal imaging, and immuno-electron microscopy, we found that αA-crystallins are present in the cytoplasm of retinal Müller cells and in the photoreceptors of rats. Given that Müller glial cells were recently described as “living light guides” as were photoreceptors previously, we suggest that αA-crystallins, as in other highly transparent cells, allow Müller cells and photoreceptors to minimize intraretinal scattering during retinal light transmission.

Solar irradiance and precipitation are the most likely drivers of the seasonal variation of net primary productivity (NPP) in tropical forests. Since their roles remain poorly understood, we use litter traps, dendrometer bands and census data collected from one hectare permanent plots to quantify the seasonality of above-ground NPP components and weather parameters in 13 sites distributed along a 2800-m altitudinal gradient ranging from lowland Amazonia to the high Andes. We combine canopy leaf area index and litterfall data to describe the seasonality of canopy production. We hypothesize that solar irradiance is the primary driver of canopy phenology in wetter sites, whereas precipitation drives phenology in drier systems. The seasonal rhythm of canopy NPP components is in synchrony with solar irradiance at all altitudes. Leaf litterfall peaks in the late dry season, both in lowland (averaging 0.54 ± 0.08 Mg C ha y−1, n = 5) and montane forests (averaging 0.29 ± 0.04 Mg C ha y−1, n = 8). Peaks in above-ground coarse woody NPP appears to be triggered by the onset of rainfall in seasonal lowland rain forests (averaging 0.26 ± 0.04 Mg C ha y−1, n = 5, in November), but not in montane cloud forests.

Emergy evaluation (EME) is an environmental assessment method which is gaining international recognition and has increasingly been applied during the last decade. Emergy represents the memory of the geobiosphere exergy (environmental work) – measured in solar emjoules (seJ) – that has been used in the past or accumulated over time to make a natural resource available. The rationale behind the concept of Emergy is the consideration that all different forms of energy can be sorted under a hierarchy and measured with the common metric of the seJ, which is then the yardstick through which all energy inputs and outputs can be compared with each other. For this reason EME is suggested to be a suitable method of environmental accounting for a wide set of natural resources, and can be used to define guidelines for sustainable consumption of resources. Despite those interesting features, EME is still affected by several drawbacks in its calculation procedures and in its general methodological background, which prevent it from being accepted by a wider community. The main operational hurdle lays in the set of mathematical rules (known as Emergy algebra rules) governing EME, which do not follow logic of conservation and make their automatic implementation very difficult. This work presents an open source code specifically created for allowing a rigorous Emergy calculation (complying with all the Emergy algebra rules). We modeled the Emergy values circulating in multi-component systems with an oriented graph, formalized the problem in a matrix-based structure and developed a variant of the well-known track summing algorithm to obtain the total Emergy flow associated with the investigated product. The calculation routine (written in C++) implements the Depth First Search (DFS) strategy for graph searches. The most important features of the calculation routine are: (1) its ability to read the input in matrix form without the need of drawing a graph; (2) its rigorous implementation of the Emergy rules; (3) its low running time, which makes the algorithm applicable to any system described at the level of detail nowadays made possible by the use of the available life cycle inventory (LCI) databases. A version of the Emergy calculation routine based on the DFS algorithm has been completed and is being tested on case studies involving matrices of thousands of rows and columns, describing real product production systems.
